Kinda dumb. Not rewatched but read the long episode summaries of most of Kuro, all of Baratie, Arlong and Loguetown and some of Whiskey Peak. It was incredibly poignant - one of the saddest backstories - but she did it for her daughters let got herself killed which isn't what they'd want and wouldn't help them.
It's very hard to understand. It's such a different psychology. She valued some sense of honour or sentimentality above her life. The duty of declaring herself their mother above the duty of practically being their mother and above her life. Did she really think it would hurt the kids more to have her say she has no kids, than to die? Did she know she could die? Did she not really think it would happen? She even says buy to the kids I think, indicating she knows (though she doesn't know they're there. Or does she?). Ordinarily I'd think was she suicidal beforehand? Like I said, it's such a different psychology.
