I'd think mainly Shounen. This seems to be subject to some discussion at times, so what'd you say?

Three way tie between the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai from Dragon Ball, the Dark Tournament from Yu Yu Hakusho and the 21st Chojin Olympics from Kinnikuman.

The Budokai subverted expectations by having Goku lose in the end, with a protagonist's victory seeming to be an unwritten rule both before and after this happened in other Shonen. The Dark Tournament had a far more generic structure, though made up for it in having more interesting fights than most of those in DBs 3 Budokai and Toguro being a fairly well-handled villain in it's later segments. The 21st Chojin Olympics in Kinnikuman had the most basic structure out of these 3, yet was the best in providing development for it's characters, plus the fights were as fun as either of those 2.

The Tencho Gorin Daibukai from Sakigake!! Otokojuku gets a mention for being the biggest in scale (16 on 16 team battles in a 5-6 round tournament), but fails to be the best due to being low tier in terms of consistency and writing, such as even fodder members of the Otokojuku team managing to square off against opponents on teams noted as being a completely different level than the previous team they faced, as well as bullshit contrivances to give characters plot armour whenever we're left to assume they died.
There's also the main tournament in the last arc of Slam Dunk, but I find it questionable to class it as an actual "tournament arc", since the tournament isn't as big a focus as the characters' feelings about the matches, to the point that the victors of the last game's loss in their next match is skimmed over completely.

If including survival tournaments, Battle Royale's story may be a contender too, but I haven't read the manga for that.

You can include anime too, if it was any good.

What about Battle-City? :shin :shin :shin

OK, OK. It's Yu-Gi-Oh! Wasn't that great, but I thought it very well portrayed how far Jounounchi has come as a duelist since his early days and some of the duels were kewl too.

Wouldn't really change my list, tbh.

Too much plot armour and contrivances, such as Ishizu's Millennium Necklace proving to be absolutely useless or the Heart of the Cards still being as dumb as ever. Most of the duels were pretty good, but considering the rules were still being established at this point (eg. the 4,000 Life Points and Tribute summons only coming into effect starting with this arc) it was clear the rules were being written to make the plot more convenient, rather than have the plot dictated by rules.

I thank both your comments, since I can't do that for some reason I'm writing that out?
