Did Kaio-Shin in the Boo-saga fulfil the same role that Future-Trunks did in the Cell-saga?

Broadly, yes; being the gateway to the antagonist(s) that that they luckily survived. Not to mention the trauma of those they were fond of getting trounced and put out.

Though Kaioshin didn't come across as someone that intended to surpass Buu or have strength-building aspirations in general. While with Trunks, we knew he had that mindset with his opposition.
