Does SS2 exist during CG?

When Gohan unleashed his full potential against Cell, do you think that Toriyama intended it to make as SSj2 form rather just Gohan's full power? I mean the true Ascended Super Saiyan was failure and they went back to master the original SSj.

I think it was intended as a new form, since Goku turning SSJ again in response to Freeza's sneak attack is basically the same scene as Gohan turning SSJ2 again when Cell returned and killed Trunks.

But SSj was revealed by Vegeta and i think the narrator and Freeza stated it while SS2 came out of nowhere.

Well it was always stated Gohan's power would rise off the charts if he got enraged. No one knew what ssj2 was because... no one had it before

It was always intended as a new form, but it didn't really exist as anything other than gohans anger unleashed in story until goku reveals he can do it for a split second against yakkon.

Gohan already called it a Super Saiyan that surpasses Super Saiyan in the Budokai, so it already wasn't Gohan-only by then, but a true transformation beyond SSJ

Yes, but we knew that at the cell games. We didn't know until later in the buu saga that anyone else could do it.
