It’s really embarrassing to have this called a “screenplay”. It’d probably be more accurate to say it’s just a memo. It’s simply something I idly dashed off for the staff, just to help explain the flow of the story and the dialogue! Never in a million years did I think it would get published. If any of you are trying to become scriptwriters, please don’t use this as an example!!

I guess you could say that some things are difficult for anyone but the original author to write, because only the original author can freely mess around with what’s already been established. A scriptwriter would get tied up trying not to screw with the original story, so in that respect they’d probably have a harder time messing around with things.

Then there’s the dialogue. The original author knows each character’s personality and backstory, so they can naturally think up dialogue that suits them.

2014 V Jump September Special Issue Comments (Released on July 19, 2014)

It should be really fun!
For the upcoming Dragon Ball movie, I thought of a new story that would be a continuation of what was serialized in the manga. I'm not just drawing pictures, but I'm paying close attention to every detail of the lines. Well, to be honest, I wasn't planning on going that far since I'm a bit of a nerd at my age, but I got carried away a little.

This time, of course, is a continuation of the previous film, "God and God, but I have consciously increased the number of action scenes significantly. As for the content, I can't touch on it because for some reason I was told "it's still a secret", but I'm sure it'll be a lot of fun! Honestly, I don't really like flashy action movies, so I'm saying this, so it's not a big deal! Mr. Torishima, the first editor in charge, who rarely praises me, rarely said "it looks good!, so it was quite a surprise! ...It would be bad if I say something too big and disappoint them, but at least I'm confident that the content will be very refreshing and enjoyable for the fans!

I'm currently drawing designs for new characters, etc. The movie is still far from completion, but please look forward to seeing what I do!!

This time, Frieza will be back! The "F" stands for Frieza. The idea for this film came to me when I was thinking about the next movie and listening to the song "F" by Maximum the Hormone, which I discovered through a friend. "F" is a song about Frieza that is brutal yet cool. I remembered someone once saying to me, "Sorry, I ended up singing about Frieza just for the heck of it" Then I understood, that's a good idea!

And so, I was able to quickly complete the story of Frieza's revival. I understood the character's personality well, so it was easy to write. And this time, as a token of my gratitude, I was given the cool letter "F" in the title of the song.

The most ferocious and most rewarding enemy to defeat. Of course, it's not just a revival, so look forward to some awesome matches!

His terrifying strength and hatefulness have been greatly increased!

To all One Piece fans, and to the few Dragon Ball fans out there, hello, this is Akira Toriyama!

In the upcoming Dragon Ball Z movie, Frieza, the most powerful enemy of all, will be making a comeback.

He's an old enemy so it seems like it'll be an easy win, but he returns even more terrifyingly strong and hateful than ever! He then comes to Earth with 1000 members of Frieza's army. How will Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Krillin, Piccolo and Master Roshi face him? Can they save the Earth?

If you don't know what I'm talking about, go to a bookstore or look it up online.

I pushed my old body to the limits and did my best to write an exciting story, so I hope you'll look forward to it!

And to Masako Nozawa, Ryusei Nakao, and Mayumi Tanaka, who have always been so kind to me, I hope you will provide even more wonderful voice acting in the upcoming film. It's been a while, One Piece voice actors. How are you all?

All that remains is to figure out how to upgrade the revived Frieza.

As long as the theme was decided to be Frieza's resurrection, and Frieza was a character with a strong personality, even I, who tend to forget things easily, remembered him well.

I also decided to increase the number of action scenes this time, so ideas started to come to me one after another.

All that was left was to figure out how to upgrade the revived Frieza.

Fortunately, the characters of Beerus and Whis, which which were inspired by the scriptwriter in the previous movie, "Battle of Gods," are also well-defined.

Combining these elements, it's rare that the story came together smoothly. It must have been extremely difficult for the animators, though. (laugh)

Son Goku
A Saiyan raised on Earth. Seeking even greater strength, he is currently undergoing intensive training under Whis as his master!

Toriyama's comment: By dying his hair light blue, he expressed the idea that he had "surpassed a certain limit, become stronger and calmer, and be able to fight calmly."

Vegeta
The prince of Planet Vegeta. He is currently training so that he won't lose to his eternal rival, Son Goku!

Toriyama's comment: If Bulma were to remake Vegeta's battle suit, she would make some slight improvements. But I felt bad so I made it black. By the way, the development department made it under Bulma's orders.

The clothes for both Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan have been slightly altered, but if you prefer the standard look, that's fine too.

The mark on both of their chests is Whis's scribbled signature.

Returned from Hell! He trained for the first time in his life and attacked Earth for revenge!!

Toriyama's comment: I couldn't make it any simpler than that, so I decided to mainly change the color. The gold medal image gives it a feeling of being the strongest, right?

Son Gohan
Son of Son Goku. He had built a peaceful family life, but he joined the fight for the first time in a long time when Frieza attacked.

Toriyama's comment: When he goes out with Videl, he often asks Piccolo to babysit. It's safer than relying on anyone else. Piccolo himself loves solitude, so he lives in a nearby mountain owned by Satan, and the only meal they eat together is dinner each day.

Krillin
A native Earthling who trained alongside Goku and is his best friend. He currently works as a police officer, protecting the peace of the town.

His hairstyle without his police helmet is the same as when he was in God and God.

Toriyama's comments: Krillin has a strong sense of justice, so being a police officer is the perfect job for him to make a living. Of course, he's extremely good. Thanks to Krillin, crime in his jurisdiction has dropped dramatically.

The air bikes are, of course, made by Capsule Corporation, and Krillin's has special tuning, such as increased speed.

Toriyama's comment: Perhaps the reason she has maintained her youthful appearance is because she has only now noticed her skin's aging and, motivated by this, has used the special solution she developed herself.

It seems that Jaco of the Galactic Patrol and Bulma have a connection since Bulma helped him out a long time ago.

Kamesennin
He is the master of Goku and Krillin. He is the one who taught Goku the Kamehameha!

Toriyama's comment: This time, Master Roshi joined the battle because he felt like, "Oh well, if there are so many enemies coming, I might as well go on a rampage for the first time in a while." If he puts his mind to it, he is already that strong.

Tagoma
A warrior who serves under Sorbet. His strength rivals that of Zarbon and Dodoria.

Tagoma's design: The ones with different colors are slightly newer ones, and are made of new materials, but most of the soldiers are wearing the same old uniforms.

Toriyama's comment: The scouter is a new model (a prototype, to be precise). It's less likely to fall off, and all of its functions have been improved. It also carries more information, but those who are used to conventional scouters still seem a little hesitant to use both eyes.

Sorbet
The mastermind behind Frieza's revival. Formerly served as a staff officer in Frieza's army!

Toriyama's comment: Sorbet is not particularly strong, but he has great intelligence and leadership skills. The current Frieza army is a ragtag collection of remnants, so Sorbet is the only one with leadership skills.

Beerus' attendant. He is actually Beerus' master, and is currently training Goku and Vegeta as well.

Toriyama's comment: I'd already done all the humanoid forms, so I decided to make Beerus look more like a cat. Whis is a character that I thought I had to make an attractive guy (laughs).

Tenshinhan
A martial artist who changed his ways after meeting Goku. He is one of the strongest people on Earth.

Krillin and Android 18's daughter. She has grown into a cool and cute girl, just like Android 18!!

Pilaf Gang
They still aim to collect the Dragon Balls, summon Shenron, and take over the world.

Toriyama's comment: Trunks and Mai are still dating, but they don't live together because they both have wandering tendencies. Whenever they get hungry, the three of them come together to get a meal. By the way, the reason they were collecting the Dragon Balls this time was, of course, to conquer the world.

Akira Toriyama’s Inside Story: What’s the key to making new characters come alive?
With new characters, I always try to introduce them in pairs. With one character, you’re stuck with just monologues or narration, but with two you can use their conversations to explain things, so you don’t need any narration! Even Goku would never say anything if Bulma and the others weren’t around.

Akira Toriyama’s Inside Story: Tell us the details on how they started training with Whis!
Goku was the one who asked Whis, of course. It was on condition that he give Whis tasty food! Vegeta didn’t want Goku to leave him in the dust, so he had no choice but to come train too.

Akira Toriyama’s Inside Story: Why don’t Goten or Trunks put in an appearance?
It’s because everyone didn’t want to risk losing the next generation of warriors. By the way, they also figured Mister Satan wouldn’t be any help at all, so he’s just relaxing at home in blissful ignorance.

Akira Toriyama’s Inside Story: Which parts got powered up when your script became a movie?
The battle with Freeza! Also, thanks to Freeza’s voice actor, his characterization is even better in the film. And the Beerus and Whis combo are good too! And there’s Nozawa-san, of course. Every character was blessed when it came to voice artists. It helps a lot.

Akira Toriyama’s Inside Story: What’s this “legend of Freeza” that terrifies the Galactic Patrol?
I think the reason the Galactic Patrol is afraid of Freeza is because he’s beaten the tar out of them before. I guess because of that experience, Freeza’s become a taboo subject among the Galactic Patrol.

Akira Toriyama’s Inside Story: What was hard about writing a script?
Once I had decided on bringing Freeza back, it was relatively easy writing the story since his character was already developed. The battle with the huge horde of enemies would have been a pain in the neck if I were drawing it myself in a manga, but I guess I dodged that bullet. Things like that were a real lifesaver.

Akira Toriyama’s Inside Story: What did you pay attention to in the script?
Looking back on it, Battle of Gods was a lot of fun for me, but there wasn’t much action, and maybe not enough fan service. So with Resurrection “F” I threw in a lot more action scenes!

Akira Toriyama’s Inside Story: What’s the relationship between Beerus and Freeza?
Even Freeza is no match for the God of Destruction Beerus, no matter what he does! Since they both destroy stuff, they got along reasonably well, but one time Freeza had his clock cleaned when he got carried away and made Beerus angry.

Akira Toriyama’s Inside Story: What’s it feel like seeing the story you write turned into a movie?
With a manga, you personally draw everything from the story to the pictures, so there’s nothing there beyond what you thought up. But with an anime, you have to leave part of it up to others, so it’s possible for things to be created beyond what you had ever imagined. That’s the most fun part.

DB review: Frieza's aides Zarbon and Dodoria
Both of them have strengths comparable to Vegeta's. Frieza seems to trust them so much that he calls them by their honorifics, "Zarbon-san, Dodoria-san"!
