Fight That Is Better Than Cell VS Goku

A lot of Goku's fights from Part 1 easily top it as far as I'm concerned. VS Roshi, VS Tenshinhan (22nd TB), VS Daimao, VS Piccolo...Including other characters' battles, there's also the climax of the Saiyan Arc in facing Vegeta, since it was probably the only time in the series where teamwork was vital.

Anime-wise, Roshi VS Tenshinhan was also worth a mention.

Maybe the original Goku vs Vegeta fight. Kamiccolo vs #17 as well. Though I don't think they are better..but certainly on par.

Indeed those fights were evenly and with dramatic struggles. I'm surprised none mentioned Goku VS Buu though, that was one hell of a fight.

Manga-wise, it wasn't that special. Anime-wise, it was limited by the SS2 segment being heavily contradictive, along with there not being as much build up towards it as previous climactic fights.

how do you guys rate the fights anyway?

For me, there are 3 key factors for both DB fights and fictional battles in general; the choreography of the fighters' movements, the strategic/tactical elements of it and the writing behind the fight's importance in regard to it's build up or the development of the characters involved. Occasionally, there can also be an entertainment factor influenced by it being either over the top rule of cool or a whacky comedic battle.

This is why I don't consider most of the later fights to be that good, since most of them were more about screaming and explosions than skillful, thought-out bouts that aided in the characters' growth.

I see more people think highly of Gohan vs. Cell than Goku vs. Cell. Regardless, I haven't seen Super mind you, but Goku vs. Cell is my 2nd or 3rd favorite fight in Z with Goku vs. Majin Vegeta being just as good and Goku vs. Frieza being my favorite.

Gohan VS Cell had more weight to the series due to Gohan's development and the true potential of his rage coming full circle, as well as him taking on his father's mantle as protagonist. As an actual fight, however, it's hard for that writing to play much of a deciding role when it was constantly a case of one side getting a beat down, with it just shifting who was doing the beating. The choreography of Goku VS Cell was indeed superior, with the build up to it being just as good as the writing behind Gohan VS Cell.

This is pretty much why I think Goku vs. Cell is a better fight than Gohan vs. Cell. While the latter is indeed a good fight, and had good writing behind, I prefer Goku vs. Cell because it was an actual fight. Gohan spent a good portion of his fight with Cell defending himself, rather than fighting back, after ascending to SSJ2 that's when the fight became a no holds barred beatdown in Gohan's favor. Goku vs. Cell had more action and build up to it, that allows it edge out Gohan vs. Cell imo.

Aside from Goku vs. Frieza (Namek) and MAYBE Goku vs. Majin Vegeta, I can't think of any fight better than the topic of discussion. But I really like Goku vs. Tien at the 23rd Budokai.
