Standing Ki isn’t all that different. Geri’s scanner is just wacky.

Depends. There’s a lot of overlapping between suppression and standing Ki. The powers Nappa and Vegeta read on Earth are probably standing levels, for example. Both times when Goku is 5000 too.

Trunks sensed Piccolo's battle ki at the same time that Gero was shocked that he was getting clowned on. If Gero had a working sensor he would've instantly known he had no chance against Piccolo.

yeah he can’t read people well above his own power it seems I think that’s the bar.

Gero's scanning abilities being so faulty never sat right with me but it's an easy way to disregard arguments like 2 suppressed Piccolo's + humans > SSJ Vegeta lol

Well, it's likely chi detectors can detect a chi, even if flashed quickly, faster than scanners. At least the scouters couldn't pick on Goku powering up to ~ 60,000 while Vegeta could sense that power and know it was being raised in bursts, so perhaps it may be the same with Piccolo and Gero.
