Up to episode 6, blown away so far. General thoughts; Shinji reminds me of Pucket, Shinji occasionally disturbs me, Misato's gud, Rei's unnerving so far. The mechs are awesome, and the Angels are cool and varied. I do wonder how they're so similar to humans, but that's definitely a spoiler.

I do wonder how they're so similar to humans, but that's definitely a spoiler.

It is towards the end of the series, though only very briefly through a few subtle statements and puzzle pieces across the series rather than an overt reveal, making it difficult to catch on a first watch. The Rebuild movies have a more direct reveal, though definitely aren't watching just for this more clear piece of world building with how much of a drop in quality the overall plot and characters are.

The Angels are the descendants of amongst several primordial alien races that have the ability to create life on other worlds. Those races were separated into two classes, being Fruit of Life types (excelling in physical capabilities) and Fruit of Knowledge types (excelling in science and technology). The angels closer to humans in terms of their functions and thinking are of the "Knowledge" class, whereas those of more bizarre features such as Ramiel are of the "Life" class.

Episode 9:

Asuka probably started the shitty Tsundere trope. Which is a shame, considering she's done really good.

I found it funny that Shiji was staring at Asuka's boobs when she threatened him.

I like how this anime can make me uncomfortable, like when Asuka slept in Shinji's bed.

Pretty much, as far as its mainstream use goes. She succeeds in being the one good tsundere as her actions are justified through her past and psychology which is expanded on later.

Too bad no modern creator has the talent to actually use the trope properly as Anno did.

Just watched episode 12. It's cool seeing the remains of Antartica and the 2nd impact. I do wonder if the archipelago under Antartica is around.

The term tsundere wasn't even used when Evangelion came out. The character archetype has existed since the 70's.

Anyway CONGRATULATIONS on watching one of the iconic anime of the 90's.

Lum from Urusei Yatsura is often cited as the first tsundere, late 70s. There are some other examples a little later that are probably more in-line with how we think of tsunderes today though.

There too complex to be considered terrible people. At the most you could consider Commander Ikari ruthless.

And even he is shown to have some pretty sympathetic qualities to him by The End of Evangelion.
