Might have been a surprise a few years ago, but since then Dragon Ball has seen a major popularity resurgence in the west as of BoG and Super, with the Broly movie doing surprisingly well at the box office internationally.
Even prior to Super, Dragon Ball was always one of the few anime series along with Pokemon and maybe Naruto that those with no knowledge of anime/manga could still recognise somewhat in the west, and now that DB is almost as popular as it was in the 90s, it's no surprise the franchise is being given the same recognition as such popular cartoons as TMNT.

It's a surprise to me that it's well known & popular enough to get a float in the Macy's Day parade lol.
