Trunks didn't seem impressed with Goku's power in their exchange, asking if he can even go SSJ, not saying anything about his Ki and holding back when they spar. Rather he tests Goku's resolve: Pretends he's going to cut him with the sword and hyping the Androids as unbeatable monsters, calling Goku "A true SSJ, just like Gohan and mom told me" when seeing his determination. Goes in hand with what Bulma (And arguably Gohan) said about Goku in the special chapter indeed. Trunks and Gohan ought to be stronger thanks to them being hybrids, but they lack Goku's genius.

But trunks already knew Goku was a Super Saiyan who had defeated Freeza, he even states that in his timeline Goku returned to Earth in time to defeat him again. So he's aware that Goku is a Super Saiyan, now he wants to see if he is capable of helping against the Androids.

He does later say that Goku is a "true Super Saiyan" after seeing Goku's attitude about fighting the Androids, but that doesn't take away from his two direct statements about Goku's power. In Trunks' eyes, Goku has the spirit of a Super Saiyan, and the power to give him hope that in 3 years time things might be different.

Trunks' exact words were "Can you become a SSJ at will?". Goku defeated Freeza on Namek without having control over the form, and Freeza having been killed in a suppressed state doesn't help with the idea that SSJ is needed to beat him.

Exactly, he wants to see how Goku would fare against the Androids. That makes Goku's initial power irrelevant when he's expected to grow for the next 3 years. Yardrat Goku probably wouldn't be able to beat the Future Androids, and even Post training Goku needed the Rosat to beat the Present Androids.

Well, the fact that Trunks pushed Goku to become a Super Saiyan after Goku confirming he can become one at will tells me that he is interested in his battle power.

Focusing specifically on Piccolo, I find it odd for him to be in such awe of Goku when he knows the following information:

1. He knows Goku was a Super Saiyan capable of defeating Freeza.
2. He's already witnessed the Super Saiyan form from Trunks.
3. He has already felt the size of Trunks' ki.

Putting these 3 things together, I don't see why someone as level-headed as Piccolo would be shocked by Goku's transformation when he already knew the following information.

Back to Trunks testing Goku, what is the "you're greater than the stories" referring to if not Goku's strength? The stories say that Goku beat Freeza twice, so I don't see what else this could be referring to. The fact that Trunks immediately said that his sword sliced Freeza in half after this comment tells me he is impressed by Goku's power, otherwise the comment about Freeza wouldn't be necessary.

Gohan decided to end his life instead of sticking it out with Trunks to train to defeat the Androids. Goku imo should be far ahead of this level to restore the hope that Trunks once had.

Yeah he did show a interest for Goku's power as well, thus why he even asked Goku if he can transform in the first place. He wanted to see what Goku was all about, including his power, but he's not particuarly interested by it. Later on Goku gauged Trunks and Goten's powers just by telling them to power up, but Goku powering up just warrants a "Cool, you look like me". Worth noting the original JP is "Wow, you're just like me", what could be taken as a power implication as well.

Piccolo showed a similar reaction to the SSJ boys despite seeing them both at the Budokai and vs Boo. I don't think it's meant to mean much beyond Goku being strong. In fact don't the others even talk about Trunks' Ki again when he transforms?

"Strength" can translate into more things than just power though: Dabra's magic made him "strong", and so did Cell's fighting skills according to Goku. Of course, I don't think being emotional strength is enough to beat the Androids, but neither is just power. As you pointed out, Gohan had been in the fight for over 10 years, but despite being more gifted than Goku he was tired of it all and gave up. On the other hand, Goku was excited at the idea of strong enemies and quickly figured he should surpass the SSJ Wall to face them, while Trunks (And presumably Gohan) didn't even know it was possible.
