How come Killua didn't know about Nen?

Rewatching this show right and was curious about this. Is there a reasonable explanation for this or is it simply a plot hole?

His family was probably waiting until he was ready to show him.

Faggotry. His younger brother who wears a girl's kimono had better command of Nen than Killua did until training on Greed Island. Basically a plot hole.

The best explanation is probably that his family wanted to wait until he was ready (something that would've been held back by him taking off) and that Kalluto gained his Nen mastery sometime before Yorknew, most likely after pleading with Illumi to help bring Killua back. Still somewhat contrived, but it's somewhat plausible.

Maybe they didn't want to teach him Nen because his already rebellious nature would leave him too far out of their control?

I'm not sure about that. Silva still didn't have any issue with sending Killua out into a world where him learning Nen would essentially be a statistical inevitability, not to mention the whole Illumi needle thing to keep him in check as well as most of the Zoldycks still putting a lot of pride in Killua despite his rebellious nature. Perhaps they would have taught him sooner if him running off didn't put a wrench in their plans, though I don't think his rebellious nature itself was why they didn't do so far earlier when it didn't seem as though he showed constant signs of it prior to leaving from what we see of his past.

When did Killua run off from his family before entering the Hunter Exams? It’s strange that he’s supposed to be the biggest prodigy of the family and yet his younger sibling has more control over it.

Couldn't have been long before it with how adept the Zoldycks are at tracking him.
In regard to Kalluto, we didn't see his proficiency during his debut and there was quite a big timeframe between his debut and next appearance, so there is the possibility of his training being moved at a quicker pace given his desire to bring Killua home is one of the most overt amongst his family and he certainly has the resources to increase the rate of his Nen mastery at a greater pace than Killua did even if less talented. It may be an assumption to suggest he started his Nen training between Killua leaving and the Yorknew Arc, but a logical assumption.
