Compared to his beginning of series self. We have very little to go on here aside from Goku saying he didn't think anyone could beat Yamcha that easily. He was also shocked by Jackie dodging the Wolf Fang Fist.

Yamcha would be lucky to had gotten a 2x increase or anywhere close to it. Yamcha was already admitting to defeat after seeing Goku and Kuririn beat up some fodder with a fraction of their strength, and Goku was only talking about the time he fought Yamcha when he said he was strong not necessarily commenting on his growth.

Sure, but he was also shocked by Jackie dodging the WFF despite already having seen him make light work of Yamcha initially. Would that level of shock be warranted if Yamcha wasn't even 2x his beginning of series self?

Imma just throw out sorts of power scaling with this (None of which is confirmed at all, so dont take anything seriously.)

Goku without his tail is around Krillins level, a power of 80-90

With his tail he becomes as strong as Roshi at about a power of 120 (If not slightly stronger, but still loses due to his height difference.). Roshi went into the tournament knowing well he could beat Goku at his level, but once he regrew his tail and got stronger, it was a lot closer of a fight. This also work with him beating Nam who is stated to have a power of 100, someone who is a highly trained fighter and more experienced than Goku at the time, as well as being older and living in more harsher environments.

Yamcha was able to wipe even the best Martial Artists in the world and secure a spot in the top 8. I would place his power around a 40-50 ish seeing as he worked his ass off to try and keep up with Goku, but since he did it alone without guidance, Goku and Krillin outshone him since they trained under one of the strongest Martial Artists of all time.

Putting it into perspective, Yamcha is one of the strongest there and was really lucky people like Pamput or King Chappa didnt show up that year. Once he trains with Roshi he would see incredible Gains like Krillin and Goku did.

I think Goku and Kuririn were still shocked by how strong they got. Goku and Kuririn were intitally surprised they had to hold back to not kill the preliminary fighters. And even later on Goku has no problem seeing a Chun who is putting more effort in fighting Kuririn's movements with Kuririn doing the same after being reminded by Goku that he should be able to do the same.

So I think Goku was just surprised because Yamcha's WFF is his ace attack and how it knocked him around in their last fight which is why he referenced it to Kuririn.

Roshi said Goku and Krillin wouldn't be able to make it past the prelims without his training and Yamcha did so he has to be at least 2x stronger than he was at the beginning.
