How strong was expected Goku vs Chappa?

The Chappa fight was being used as a measuring stick for Goku's progress after 3 years. How strong were they expecting him to be there? We see Krillin and Yamcha trying to delude themselves into thinking that Goku would be the same because he didn't look any different physically. Their demeanor tells me that they actually believed he would be a fair amount stronger but they didn't want to admit it.

Perhaps it’s best to think of the idea that Chapa-ō = Goku 3 years prior in power (or at-least equal in power)? DragonBall has the thing where a-lot of times the top-power of the previous arc gets defeated easier at the beginning of the next to notify how much bigger the next villain is. Usually they are same-ish level.

Cui = Vegeta
Mecha-Freeza not too different in power from 100% Freeza (or SSJ Goku)
& so-on

it would be a definitive show of improvement.

So what do they expect from Goku? That he got 1.05-1.1x stronger over the three years? I agree that is the intention of Chappa's placement, but it doesn't jive with Yamcha/Krillin deluding themselves. It seemed to me like they knew Goku would be stronger and were still blown away by his performance.

5-10% stronger sounds solid, and Chappa is on the same range.

Baba Goku: 100
Expected Goku: 105
King Chappa: 110

As they say, Goku just might squeak by.

I assume they didn’t neccessarily have any expectations. After-all especially in DragonBall it is hard to tell how much more power-full characters get after a time-skip. I’d think they just saw Goku 3 years before & were like “if it’s the same Goku it’ll be hard, but since it’s Goku he might be able to win” or some-thing like that.

Goku only traveled the world in those 3 years. No master. No gravity room. No special training. Narratively it makes sense he would be alot stronger but technically there is some basis why Kuririn and Yamcha wouldn't expect him to be too much stronger.

There was talk about Goku not improving at all. They are assuming it’s more or less Baba Goku vs Chappa.
