How will Smoker become relevant again?

After Punk Hazard, I find it hard to imagine ever seeing Smoker relevant again, but I don't think Oda would simply shaft him either.

Either Vegapunk will help him find ways to unlock his Awakening, or he'll remain irrelevant in the long run until the finale after years of training.

I really want Smoker to become an admiral someday, but with the way he got shitstomped by Doffy, I'm not feeling it. Awakening might not be enough; even if he could unlock it, by the time he did, Luffy would probably be admiral-tier at this rate. Smoker is turning into the Namek Frieza of OP.
