...that scene reminded me very much of a scene from DragonBall. I mean when Luffy and Sabo reunite. At-first Luffy doesn't recognise who it is. When he does, it's someone very close to him and someone he thought was dead. Then he cries happily. Even jumping onto his face, l0l.

I mean this scene reminded me a lot of the scene in DragonBall where Goku reunites with Grandpa Gohan. Even the jumping on the face thing is something Goku does there. Even the dialouge seemed very similar (even-though I might be misremembering for the dub). But seriously can you look at this side-by-side and see the similarities?

Might have been a homage, who knows.

That seems like a vague comparison tbh. You could easily make that connection to any such usage of the trope in other series.

I do agree that Grandpa Gohan had some inspiration to OP, but not here. I feel that Oda's need to mask Garp in his initial appearances to not spoil his connection as Luffy's grandfather align with Gohan wearing the Fox Mask, the only difference being the former being for outer-universe/meta reasons whilst the latter is an in-universe reason.

Yeah. It's kind-of vague, but the dialouge just seemed very similar too after the revelation. Maybe it's just me though.

I don't think it was an intentional homage. Oda has stated he had Garp wear that dog mask because he already used his character in one of those OP one-shots where he was Luffy's grandfather in a different form.
