Goku and Gohan didn't know how to fly when they turned into the Oozaru so who's to say you needed to be in control to be able to do it.

Gohan knew how to fly at this point, yet he didn't show the capability of doing so once he became an Oozaru. From what evidence we have, it's natural to assume control over the form is necessary.

This could help the Oozaru avoid attacks in a less linear style at least. Still wouldn't be worth much to Saiyans with mastery over SSJ forms.

Goku's comment on Vegeta's speed also implied that Vegeta maintained his speed rather than boosted it, so even Kaioken x10 would be more of a useful boost despite the strain. Oozaru's only really useful if you can absolutely dominate your opponent(s) whilst using it.
