It sucks how there are many alternative stories besides the manga and the anime in Dragon Ball... something so set in stone in both anime and manga about Goku being the 1st one to become a SSJ is being disputed by lots of people who say Bardock was actually the Legendary, the 1st SSJ, and now people also saying Yamoshi ought to be this one. And we can't actually sush them because this fucking thing was written by Toriyama...

I don't like when they change something like this that has been so clear in the manga and in the anime.

That was my problem with all of Super. Despite my mixed feelings about GT, that's the story I knew and after 20 years of Toei promoting it as the official anime sequel to Z, we get Super that got rid of it entirely. So I had some bad feelings toward the entire thing, but I think that was my fault. I just dug too deeply into Dragon Ball. I invested too much of my emotions into that dumb little story. When you sit back, relax, and kind of take it as it comes, it really is a lot more enjoyable than if you go in there as this die-hard fan -- at least that's how it was for me. I just had to remember that this is story made for money and now it's time to cash in a little more. Once you pull your emotional stake out of Dragon Ball, it's really relieving. Then again, besides superhero movies, this is the only story that I can think of where I enjoy it more if I emotionally invest less. It's so bizarre.

I also hate how Akira Toriyama changed the reason to which Goku was sent to Earth --said in his Bardock manga to be due to be so Goku would escape from Freeza's claws --, whereas the reason said in the manga (being sent so he could kill the Earthlings) makes things way more entertaining imo, besides giving Goku's role of protecting the Earth later against the Saiyajins way more meaning --I mean, the Saiyajin that was supposed to kill them all now fighting to protect them sounds pretty cool and way better than turning the motive the same as in Superman, and works out better with the Saiyajin nature at the time.

Other thing I hate is the portrayal of there being Saiyajins with pure heart and how the original SSJ (or SSJG, following BoG) was one with pure heart that would fight against the evil-heart ones... it's just unecessary imo, and the Saiyajins being completely bad by nature seemed already pretty well established in the manga... the Saiyajin race was introducced as those ruthless warriors, built in fighting prowess, with Goku being obviously the exception due to hitting his head... now introduccing new former Saiyajin warriors just seems unecessary and a step backwards from what we knew about the Saiyajins, me thinks.

The OVA is Episode of Bardock. The TV-Special is Bardock - TFOG.
