Chapter: 453 (DBZ 259), P9.2-7
Context: as Trunks and Goten fight No.18 in their Mighty Mask costume
No.18: “…He really is a weird bastard…His arms and legs are extremely small for his body…And he’s so unusually strong…”
*they become Super Saiyans*
No.18: “!!”
Trunks: “Either way, we’re at a disadvantage in this getup, so we’ve got no choice but to settle this with a kiai cannon!”
Goten: “Eh! But will she be alright?...”
Trunks: “Don’t worry, she won’t die if we do it appropriately. She’s No.18…”

Doesn't it kind imply the kids are way below the adults? Kid Trunks doesn't think she'll die even if he does it hard, because she's #18. Even an effortless blast from the adults is capable of turning #18 in smithreens, à la future Trunks did to future #18.

They're holding back as much as possible to avoid killing her, like semi Cell...

But Trunks says she won't die since she is #18... pretty much like "Don't worry Gohan, she is strong, so she won't die even if we hit her hard enough".

"She won't die if we do it appropriately."

Appropriately meaning not full power, and 18 still shat herself at the sight of the blast.

They're clearly overestimating #18. Trunks knew she was once stronger than Vegeta/Goku. This just shows he didn't know by how much and went purely off her hype.

She just fought them... and if anything Trunks underestimated her since his blast wasn't enough to do the job.

The blast might've missed, but the intensity alone was what prompted her to end it.

What about Trunks saying she won't die 'cause she's #18? Sure an adult SSJ wouldn't think it, right?

#18 won't die if he doesn't overdo it.

If he does overdo it, she'll likely die. That's why Goten yells at him to not use full-power before he does it.

Then why mention "She's #18, after all" if she won't die because they'll hugely suppress the blast?

To reassure Goten that she was still tough enough to handle an appropriate level of Chi-blasts. Goten was unsure of the idea as soon as Trunks suggested it.

Goten is unsure about her safety towards a FP blast. Considering Trunks says she won't die since she is tough, the "heavily suppressed" doesn't take place.

The key to Trunks' statement is dealing with #18 using Chi-blasts in an appropriate manner. Trunks specifically says that to show that not controlling the blast could result in her being killed from the attack. The only takeaway, imo, is that she's tough enough to handle anything outside of a full-power blast. That's not to say the held-back attack wouldn't have been enough to wipe her clean since they can't sense her. Everything is guesswork on their end.

Does "appropiately" necessarily mean "suppressed"?
Trunks specifically says that to show that not controlling the blast could result in her being killed from the attack.
Even if he meant suppressed, later he implies it wouldn't matter since she is #18. It's pretty much "Shen won't die if we do it appropriately... she's #18 after all (meaning they could hit her hard enough)".
[That's not to say the held-back attack wouldn't have been enough to wipe her clean since they can't sense her.
She could still dodge it, so it wouldn't probably be enough to wipe her out.

Again, why emphasize #18 being too tough (then they therefore can hit her hard enough) if he'll heavily suppress the blast?

What else could it mean exactly? If #18 won't die if they do it appropriately, it has to be referencing power. There's nothing else he could be talking about. The fact that Goten quickly reminds him not to use full-power indicates that the intention was to not hit her with their strongest attack.

I don't get the same impression as you. It's all in the same statement. There's no reason for Trunks to bring up possibly killing her if they're not capable of it in the first place. Like, why even bring it up?

She barely dodged it. And I don't think that necessarily indicates the attack couldn't have been enough to take her out.

It's emphasized to show that she's still tough enough to take a barrage of Chi-blasts assuming they're not at full-power. We don't know to what extent the blast was held-back. All we know is that he intentionally used a weaker blast and it was enough to make her shit herself.

It also indicates the "appropriately" wasn't about power, necessarily. Why would Goten bring it up if Trunks already said he'd suppress?
Maybe he's just trying to say "thinking well, she's #18, we can even do it at full power".
[It's emphasized to show that she's still tough enough to take a barrage of Chi-blasts assuming they're not at full-power.
Like I said, the "holding back" doesn't take place if he's saying "it's #18, she is tough". Are you saying Trunks is like "she is tough, she'll survive a blast with a tenth of our power..." wut?
All we know is that he intentionally used a weaker blast and it was enough to make her shit herself.
He says he won't kill her even if they hit hard. She is tough. Yet he is heavily holding back? You haven't explained this...

I don't see how that makes sense. Trunks is the one that mentions appropriately in the first place. That means he already has it in his mind to not attack her at full-power. Goten giving him another warning is just making sure he knows to hold-back. They're kids.

That's...not stated. And who said anything about 1/10 of anything? All I said was they held-back. To what degree isn't mentioned, but we know Trunks didn't use full-power. That's all that matters. Goten warns him not to use full-power. All of this is in the same context. Everything is pointing to them needing to control their power to attack #18.

Trunks said she won't die if they do it appropriately. That implies doing it inappropriately will kill her. That's the entire meaning of the statement or there's no point of even saying that.

Trunks: "Relax! If we control it right, she won't die. It's #18, after all!"

The anime line is basically parroting what the manga says. A controlled blast won't kill #18. If they don't control it right, the opposite will take place.

What you're basically saying is Trunks is saying she won't die no matter what, which doesn't make any sense, nor would he need to mention anything regarding being appropriate if it wasn't necessary in the situation.
