Who wins? A lot of characters in the movie where hyping up this fight. Has Trunks gotten stronger or did Gohan get weaker? Or both?

Everyone in the movie thought it’d be a good match though. Does Gohan have any better feats than Trunks?

Gohan actually managed to fight with Bojack's transformed state for a bit before getting caught by his minions. Compare that to Vegeta, who got wrecked by base Bojack and Trunks is at best his equal.

Could Gohan maybe have had a rage boost? Cell said that his power had begun to rise when the Cell Jr.s were beating Goku and the others' asses, and everyone else had already fallen by that point.

I was always under the impression Gohan had a rage boost here too since I think he also had one in the Cell Games.
What absolutely makes no sense in this movie is how Vegeta is portrayed. The movie acts like he’s also quit training along with fighting (Trunks says he’s too rusty to fight), but he’s still stronger than Trunks who’s supposed to match Gohan. And then Gohan is still stronger than both anyway
. Toei probably expected Gohan to keep training after Goku dies (or at least not let himself get rusty since Chi-Chi says he’s been mostly studying), but couldn’t help themselves with the Gohan nerf.

Maybe Freeza's method of training for 4 months was sitting on his chair for twice as long as usual
Perhaps he trained just enough to master the SSJ level.

Yet he didn't want to participate in the tournament where Gohan will be at, where his newfound strength could be put to the test? That's quite incongruous with Vegeta's characterization in general.
He knew Gohan was SSJ2, so he had no chance.

That's retarded. He knew he had no chance 7 years ago against Galu, yet was fired up to fight him and prove himself when Goku said he had been training hard also (and has surpassed Vegeta with more efficient training methods/plot hax and zenkais more than once). He also said his power was now above Gohan's but said if Gohan goes into a frenzy there's no telling how strong he'd become, yet his whole reason for entering the Budokai was to fight Gohan. Being a pussy isn't in Vegeta's characterization except in extreme cases like when Freeza embarrassed him royally.
That, and Gohan couldn't even go SSJ2 at will in the movie. Vegeta turning off the TV when it showed Trunks fighting also heavily suggests he'd retired from fighting as he said he would post-CG.
