Neon Genesis Evangelion

Who else has seen this? Before I saw it, it was one of the most hyped up anime by many people who frequent these sites. Personally it didn't live up to that hype level for me, but I still enjoyed it. Thoughts on it in general?

It's a good watch for sure. I really liked the first half, but the second half took a very weird psychological turn. It isn't for everyone but a lot of people rave about it.

It may not seem so special now, but it was an absolute game changer when it came out.

The original still holds up well (except those last two episodes), and the remakes seem pretty good too. It's just one of those series where it's become a victim of it's own hype over time.

Yes, those last two episodes really left a sour taste in my mouth. I don't even fully remember the episodes as I saw them a long time ago, but I recall not being able to understand any of it.

von (like "v" in "very" and then "on" as in "take on")
jel (as in "gel" in "hair gel" or "jel" in "jelly")
ee (like the letter "E"'s name)
"on" (as in "on" in "put on")

or just "Avon" "jelly" "on"

But how does an E pronounce like an A?

Just how it's transliterated. "E" is pretty common for "Ay" and they maybe wanted the name to look similar to the word "Evangelical" etc, although I don't know if evangelism or evangelicalism are related to the events in the series since I never watched it.

Honestly, I can see the appeal of Evangelion, but the extent that the fanboys take it is absurd. I remember being alienated by the Infinity members when that was the main craze around there.

Alienated? I never felt such things and I was pretty adamant about not liking it that much.
