Chapter: 279 (DBZ 85), P14.1
Context: as Goku prepares to fight Recoom
Vegeta: “Th-this really is strange…He’s oddly calm…Doesn’t he know his opponent’s true strength?...I can’t feel any desire to kill from him at all…”

Right after this, Vegeta wonders if Goku is the SSJ!!!

If he felt no desire to kill from Goku, why would he associated that with SSJ when the legend they went by is that SSJ had no compassion and sought blood (iirc the latter was said by Ginyu). ?

I think his utter calmness in the face of such powerful enemies is what caused Vegeta to suspect he might have become the SSJ. Later Vegeta also says "Only I can become the SSJ Kakarrot, you aren't able to be merciless" suggesting Vegeta also thought the SSJ was a ruthless warrior of legend. When Ginyu saw that Goku wasn't ruthless he also had a similar assessment, saying that he can't become a complete SSJ.

Yes but isn't calm opposed to ruthless? Seems like SSJ has what they thought (and somewhat true later on) that restless and will to kill.

His calmness in this case stems from complete confidence in being able to stomp the Ginyus. Vegeta openly said afterwards that Goku's power had surpassed Saiyan limits.

It's odd because Vegeta later says that Goku can't be a Super Saiyan due to his lack of ability to kill.

I think it was more about Goku's battle power than anything. Vegeta knew that Goku had to be outrageously strong to behave like this, hence he could be a Super Saiyan.

Yes but the main point is about the not intent to kill.

Intent to kill implies you are taking the fight seriously. The Ginyus weren't serious opponents for him.

More like "desire to kill", which was the word. Lack of desire to kill is... Not wanting it. Intent as I worded could be taken differently yeah, but desire is something deeper.

He was saving his true strength for Ginyu himself. Masking his powers then using 66.7% of it in short bursts is enough to make short work of his men.

That's pretty much what I'm saying. The Ginyus weren't even warm up material for him, hence there was no need to display killing intent.
