Its difficult for me to say, I love Dragon Ball's action and adventure but I also love the grittiness of the Saiyan arc and Namek arc in Z. I guess I'll go with Z (excluding Boo) because I am a Vegeta wanker, but the Boo arc is so bad that I'd rather read all of DB than all of Z.

But seriously it's not really a noticeable gap. The fight was visibly "even" despite Ten acknowledging inferiority.

Well, I'd still say 96% is pretty close. But Goku was visibly stronger, he got more hits if we don't count the time Goku got paralyzed by Chaozu's powers and Tenshinhan admitted he'd not accomplish too much in a hand to hand fight against the little Saiyan and opted to destroy the arena, forcing this latter to an out of bounds defeat.

Tenshithands was KO'd by Goku's headbutt.

He still won

I like part one the best right around volume 3 I think. From there on it's pretty much superior to anything that Z has to offer.

It's a pretty noticeable gap. Once goku goes to his tournament level of power he easily counters everything tenshinhan throws at him, lands the far more meaningful blows, and has tenshinhan constantly comment how he can't be being beaten by such a shrimp.

Even when he's being paralyzed goku takes all of tenshinhans shots easily.
