Vegeta's statement to Gohan could function as provocative taunting and bravado simultaneously. He could genuinely be unsure how powerful Gohan is while having enough confidence in himself to taunt and make Gohan doubt.

To compromise, I tend to go with the idea that Gohan had a rage boost (or at least something akin to letting out more latent power) to increase his power when his Kamehameha obliterated SPC, so it'd have a chain of Boo Arc Goku = Majin Vegeta > Gohan (Burst of Rage) >> CG Gohan ~ Pre-Majin Veget

I roll with the same idea, except I have Enraged Gohan superior to both Goku and Vegeta due to Goku saying he wouldn't lose to anyone in the entire world.

I'd say that statement, as well as Vegeta's about "who knows what'd happen if he went into a frenzy" are more to do with how much of a game changer and how overblown many of Gohan's rage boosts have been in the past, going from 1 to 710 to 1,307 against Raditz, for example.

That isn't a necessary interpretation at all.

Enraged Gohan being superior to all SSJ2s would be sufficient for the statement to make sense.

I still don't believe vegeta was a SSJ2 before the charm. Vegeta didn't even know goku was stronger than gohan until he powered up to fight him.

So even if he was a SSJ2 he's still be weaker because he needed the charm to catch up to a SSJ2 goku that he wasn't aware was stronger than cell games gohan.

Vegeta thought he was superior to Gohan though, how could he be without having "surpassed the Super-Saiyan wall" himself?

Then how do you explain him having the confidence to question Gohan's place in the pecking order long before he found out how weaker Gohan had truly gotten. Someone like Vegeta wouldn't be proud of being above Gohan in equal forms if Gohan still had SS2 and he didn't.

Vegeta didn't even know goku was stronger than gohan until he powered up to fight him.

He expected it though:

Context: as Goku and Vegeta are about to fight
Goku: “I don’t wanna take any damage from you and have it become Majin Boo’s energy…So I’m gonna end this quickly, at maximum power.”
Vegeta: “I’m looking forward to this…Show me the fruits of your training in the afterlife. *Goku transforms into Super Saiyan 2* Just as I’d expect. Your power is greater than Gohan’s was back then!”

The initial portion of the Boo Arc is pretty fucking hard to scale, all things considered.

No, or if he did, it was minimal at best. I was referring to the idea that his "perhaps" when talking to Gohan was done mockingly rather than a serious question.
