How strong was Gekko Moriah in his prime?

We aren't given much information to go on. One random character mentioned him having once been a rival to Kaido, but that could've simply been due to Kaido being far weaker in the past. At the very least, he'd probably at least be above his pre-timeskip Shadow Asgard self and whatever his post-timeskip power is will likely be a representation of that. I wouldn't be surprised if his lack of motivation was similar to Crocodile's and his prime self is on Admiral tier or something.

Wasn’t Kaido a part of Rocks 40 years ago? I think it is implied he has always been a monster.

I'd say that's very arguable. Hina implied Kaido and Big Mom had ties with Rocks, but never confirmed them as actual members, especially when Garp said their comeback would be unimaginable even when an alliance between the two Yonko was a huge possibility. Also, that still wouldn't confirm the two as having always been at this level, seeing as how such a prestigious pirate crew as the Roger Pirates featured novices as well such as Shanks and Buggy. Considering the Rocks were active 40 years ago, it's highly possible that Kaido joined them as a novice recruit before they disbanded.
