I believe the question was whether or not Trisha's soul was actually in that misshapen mess of bones and flesh, so the physical being itself was clearly inhuman but Ed was afraid that he had brought back Trisha as said inhuman thing.

Oh yeah I forgot about that. It's not so much his mom's soul as it is literally turning his mom into a monster then, I guess. Though I suppose checking the hair color is still a weird way of verifying that.
