There is something I don't get about it. So obviously Roger was way older when he died than when he initially met Rayleigh and began to sail as a pirate. When was it that he became known as The Pirate King? Was it after conquering the Grand Line in the 4 years, or was he also a renowned pirate before that?

Basically what I'm asking is did the legend of Roger only begin during that 4 year trip, or was he already a big time pirate before that?

He was big (same as Luffy) but not the best until he conquered the Grand Line. At least from my understanding.
