Rage boosts aside, how strong is he? Does he even have a calm, non enraged full power?

1,500 since that's what he was at the beginning on Namek. Maybe a bit lower pre-Namek.

What does that mean? Piccolo trained him and thought he taught him everything he knew, as-well as Gohan being able to track the Saiba-Meng vs Yamcha fight.

Gohan seemed intimated by the Saibamen so I am inclined to say the 981 reading was his actual power level.

By Namek he is at 1,500 like stated.

Given that Gohan knew how to suppress ki in early Namek he should be been able to do so on Earth. I can't see Piccolo having faith in him if his natural level was 981.

Gohan in the Saiyan Saga is either wimpy (Represented by his PL of 981) and afraid of fighting or a furious killing machine (Represented by his PL of 2,800). But is there a middle ground? A full power Gohan who isn’t afraid of fighting, but isn’t exactly enraged.

Why take things to the extreme at every possible opportunity? The point was made. Piccolo told Gohan to be confident in his own abilities. Yes, he did say that Gohan's power outstripped his own, but it's clear during the fight with Nappa he was also counting on Gohan's natural ability. Gohan was the focal point of the sneak attack on Nappa and Piccolo told him to blast him with everything he had, and Gohan clearly wasn't enraged.

Yeah, let's let 981 Gohan blast the shit out of Nappa. Should be gr9!

Piccolo saying Gohan should be confident in his abilities and that he’s stronger than him are said in the same line. Piccolo clearly has the same power in mind here. He also wants Gohan to finish Nappa while he stays as distraction with Kuririn. Definitely sounds like Piccolo believed Gohan to be the strongest.

Why would Gohan be using all of his power when he just wants to swiftly kick out some fodder and power down asap? As Ahill already pointed out, Gohan > Kuririn w/o weighted shirt > 1,500

Ok, so why are we never told that Gohan is so far ahead of Krillin? Hell, even directly after having his potential unlocked by the Master Molester he was still equal to Krillin. Seems that AT was viewing things pretty simply. They were stated to both be "around 1,500" which allows some leeway for Gohan to be stronger. Then after both had their potentials unlocked they were still around the same. No scouter ever showed base Gohan being above 1,500 so I see no reason to go with it.

I will have to rewatch/read the Kuririn vs Gohan fight but I think it makes sense for Kuririn to be stronger than Gohan before the potential unlock. Gohan's potential should way outstrip Kuririn's not make him only slightly stronger even if you want to go with Daizenshuu making it a slow burn of them maxing out to 75k and 200k respectfully.

Honestly, Gohan's base can be anywhere from 981 to under 1,500 during the Saiyan fight. I do think he's weaker than all the humans when not bloodlusted, minus Yajirobe and Chaozu.

Is Gohan overwhelming Kuririn not evidence? Around 1,500 doesn’t have to mean exactly it, though I’m not sure how far they can go.

When is it said they were equals? They’re just lumped together as “over 10,000”. Gohan clearly does a lot better than Kuririn vs Recoome too. Granted Recoome was toying, but Kuririn was too weak for even that.
