I love big posts explaining why something is shit. Please?
Well, here goes as to why Part 2 Toriko is shit...
- Power creep is even worse than in the later arcs of Dragon Ball. By the time of the last arc, Toriko is the only one of the main 4 characters to be even semi-relevant, not to mention the scale and abilities of the top tiers is ridiculous. It makes Freeza Arc Zenkais look tame. Most of them have some haxed regeneration factor that allows them to survive fatal injuries to the point you barely feel any tension in the fights.
- Bullshit links between characters. Toriko and Komatsu are revealed to have secret special heritages that make them almost like any other modern Shonen leads, their fates secured by such so we know they're the only ones to be relevant. None of this was implied before the timeskip, with Starjun seeming indifferent to Toriko beyond seeing potential in him in Part 1, yet being fully aware of their connection in Part 2 without it being suggested he learnt it during the timeskip.
- Erratic pacing. The first two arcs are pretty bland events that follow the generic pattern in this series of building your strength up to face an area's final boss and gain a reward from him. So much so is it here that after 2/7 of these ingredients are collected, the mangaka seemed to get bored and just had the other 5 be collected offscreen, showing even he viewed the pacing as bad. Then, we skip to having fights that due to the characters involved, should have a lot of build up, yet end swiftly and the confrontation gets brushed aside as being somewhat irrelevant.
- Unused/Misused potential. The manga ends with Toriko and Komatsu going out into space, meant to be the next level, despite the whole event of reviving and eating GOD to be the one thing the series was building up for. Leaving it so open ended feels less like a conclusion and more like a lead into a Part 3. Moreso, many of the concepts around this are vastly unexplored. For instance, what the Green Oni Toriko has actually is, despite it being perhaps the strongest Appetite Devil in the series.
There's many more things I could least in detail, but I can't be bothered.
