The context is exactly the same lol
I don’t think it’s exactly the same tho. In your example Jiroh’s transformation is framed around his demon identity — hair spiking, horns, sword manifesting... so the visual is just one element of him revealing that side. In DB, SSJ was a legendary form that had been foreshadowed for a while, tied to emotion and myth, and the hair turning blonde/spiking up became the visual signal that a Saiyajin had crossed into that legendary state.

So yeah, the surface resemblance is there, but what makes SSJ stick isn’t just “hair spikes up,” it’s the way Toriyama tied that design choice to the narrative impact and meaningful moment. Even tho the design inspiration came from earlier works, the meaning of the visual is totally different.

Lol reading this thread. Wtf.... Come on Scott, try posting normally like an adult would. You have clearly done nice researches on some stuff and info that are cool as seeing references and inspirations well backed up in some threads are nice info. They aren't random posts made with no thought or effort. Whatever your intent is, if it is to make ppl react by showing DB hadn't original concepts or wtv, they're still valid and interesting threads — for the most part. When you go off tangents like this, you're begging for ppl not to even take you seriously. Keep those weird posts to yourself man, it accomplishes nothing but to bury your own thread... Not to mention it's degenerate behaviour, no one wants to read it.

@ahill Nah bro you're capping when you unironically claim Super Saiyan was "built up" lol. It wasn't even a thing until Freeza vaguely mentioned it like midway through the Namekku arc. Then, Vegeeta brings it up when Gokuu arrives and we don't learn anything about it other than that it's a really strong Saiyan, one that supposedly appears once every millennia. Nothing suggested it was a transformation making you several times stronger until Gokuu randomly transforms when Freeza kills Kucklin even though rage was never something that made Gokuu stronger; that was Gohan's shtick. Oh, and it randomly heals Gokuu's injuries and restores his energy because plot

Anyway, for the record, Jiroh is supposed to be a mythical, legendary figure himself. His true identity is that of Shutendouji (Drunken Boy); although the scanlation I posted calls him a demon, he's actually an oni, which roughly translates to ogre. He's an ogre with godlike abilities and worshiped by a family of humans who descended from ogres themselves. Him gaining horns, a sword, turning blonde, etc not only represents him tapping into his demon/ogre blood, but him becoming the legendary Shutendouji. His transformation is more built up than Super Saiyan ever was.
