I know it was obviously promotional-tactic to make Toriko seem on the level of both series, but it just made the whole show seem 2nd rate (I don't know. Maybe it was.) and out-of-place next to the other 2 shows. When you look back in a few years, you might be thinking :wtf :wtf :wtf is Toriko doing next to those 2 series? It was like Toei saying you like One-Piece, you should watch Toriko, too.

One-Piece never needed DragonBall's endorsement to become popular.

Agree or disagree.

The first part can be seen as more of a tribute to 80s Shonen such as Dragon Ball, Hokuto no Ken, JoJo and Kinnikuman, enough that it can be considered more than a ripoff, though it indeed leeched off OP more than need be.

The post-timeskip material was Naruto tier shit, however, so regardless of whether or not it can be called a ripoff, it's definitely inferior to both Dragon Ball and One Piece.

Sorry, that I wasn't clear. When I said it leeched-off One-Piece, I meant the constant promoting with One-Piece. The first episode of the series was a cross-over with One-Piece. Then the Dream-9 cross-over once again with One-Piece, and DragonBall too this time. Then the Double-Feature movie. Toei was really desparate to have One-Piece's popularity to rub-off on Toriko too. One-Piece never needed that kind-of endorsement from DragonBall, yet still surpassed every manga/anime ever.

I can agree to some extent with that. I mainly think the crossovers were due to the series being similar, both being Shonen animated by Toei and Toriko not having a large fanbase. Regardless of that, it does display a lack of integrity when the pilot episode is a crossover.

Exactly! It might have had the opposite effect on some than Toei really wanted and just saw Toriko as 2nd rate (which again, it might be, but I don't know). If you think about it Toriko seems kind-of out-of-place in the Dream-9 cross-over, like you got One-Piece and DragonBall, and then...you have, ehhhh...Toriko, l0l.

And Toriko was in J-Stars Victory Vs despite not being near popular enough. :CC :CC :CC

Such a failure and they tried so hard to push it so hard as the next big series. :cry :cry :cry

The game included plenty of series that were far less popular, though it certainly didn't have the popularity to be prepped up with OP, Naruto and Bleach in the story mode.

If it's a Shonen about males punching each other, Jump will milk it for all its worth. MHA and Black Clover are proof enough of that.

Let's just say that's what I meant, but I didn't play the game. The manga also got a couple of cross-overs with One-Piece. I guess it helps being the friend of Eiichiro Oda. :troll :troll :troll

I think they were trying extra hard with Toriko to make it into one of the big series, but failed big time. Never took-off. The series also seems trash.

Considering Jump's trend of the DB inspired series becoming hits, the staff must have thought Toriko becoming super popular was inevitable. How wrong they were.

Toriko is :trash. Not to the same extent as something like Post-timeskip Naruto or Bleach and definitely nowhere near as bad as My Hero Academia, but it's still dumb entertainment at best and its best aspect is reminding the audience how much better the manga series it was taking influence from were by comparison. Only thing it has that really stands well on its own is the artwork and whilst it's more detailed than that of most modern Shonen, it isn't Hokuto no Ken or Slam Dunk tier.

Looking at Wikipedia Toriko only got ~20 mill sales, l0l. At the very bottom of best-selling manga. Considering all the promotion and hype for it the series failed miserably. Anyother series with that much support by the publishers themselves could have done better.

Fishman Island? l0l

Toriko is garbage, looks like to me. I say that without even watching. The premise seems like a parody in and of itself.

To be fair, it could've probably sold a lot more if it had more international marketing. It really got no backing in the West outside of the anime getting an English dub. If the overseas licencors wanted to push it as much as most of the popular battle Shonen such as My Hero Academia, it could've easily sold twice as much. Seems the western licencors didn't deem a series about superficially manly meng hunting and cooking beasts as something that would sell.
I would say it could've had a lot of popularity with more overseas advertisement if it was advertised as an adventure manga equivalent of something such as Monster Hunter, though the post-timeskip basically removes that by just being a DBZ clone with more animals.

Wasn't it always a DragonBall clone? :troll :troll :troll

Even-so I'd say its sales were lagging even domestically for a series with such a huge backing by the corporations it amounted to jack-sheeeet. Also doesn't help to me that the character looks like the Fist of the North-Star protagonist with Goku clothes on.

Do not be so respectful towards Fuckman Island. That trash should never have its actual name said.

But yea qhat I read was no enough to captivate me. I would rather read about old man Hody Jones 24 hours a day for the rest of my life than read Fagriko.

Aesthetically, yes, though narrative-wise Part 1 Toriko was closer to a One Piece/early Hunter X Hunter clone.

Domestic popularity isn't always everything. For example, Cowboy Bebop was a domestic failure, yet is one of the most beloved and popular anime series in the west. Obviously that isn't the case with Toriko, but that's just some food for thought.

Even had Toriko gained a lot of popularity, it was definitely the type of series to fizzle out once it ended. There was little else to be explored once the series ended in terms of characters and whilst the finale seemed to build up to a new arc by going into space, it meant little when it was already established NEO was already beyond all galactic threats.

At the very least, I hoped Toriko would help popularise the retro series it took inspiration from such as Hokuto no Ken and Kinnikuman, but it failed to even prep the bull for them.

Yeah, it was probably going to go the way of Bleach even if it did gain popularity. It's seriously pathetic though for a series that got constantly paired-up with One-Piece (& DragonBall to an extent) to not even get its own video-game (when the series is tailor-made for a fighting game).
