The Goku/Vegeta gap at Freeza Saga is huge, unless you select to go with guidebooks' bull. I don't see Getes
closing that gap so soon.

I usually put Vegeta around or slightly higher than this level of Goku. Just makes sense to me.

It's a minor theory of mine, but Vegeta does say (at least in Viz) something along the lines of, "You think you're so good because you're a Super Saiyan, Kakarrot, but I'll show you..." To me it implies without Super Saiyan, he might be able to put up a good fight.

He doesn't have Super Saiyan, so take away Super Saiyan from Goku and you see my reasoning, yes?

Does Vegeta not go on about how he will become a Super Saiyan in the future and beat Goku? Seems that he's banking on the fact that he will become one when he makes that statement.

I think KP means that the only difference between the two when Vegeta says that is that Goku has Super Saiyan, i.e. Goku wouldn't necessarily beat him without Super Saiyan, and that in the coming years (the future) the only gap he needs to bridge is that one (getting Super Saiyan).

I get what he is saying. I don't see why it means he is superior in the here and now when the statement is referring to the future.

It doesn't have to mean that, I guess. It just feels like the future part is only referring to Vegeta attaining Super Saiyan. The "You think you're so good because you're a Super Saiyan, Kakarrot," part would be present-tense, implying that, in the present, Goku isn't all that without Super Saiyan.

I would personally just take it as a general "I'll get Super Saiyan as well" statement, for the record, but I think a close reading makes the above implication pretty viable.

Also, the evidence about Trunks seems good enough for me. When Base Trunks unleashes his full power, Krillin is simply in awe, as are the Z fighters.

Goku >= Trunks > Vegeta seems like the chain to me.

Well, we have the issue of Vegeta never sensing Namek Goku' full power, so how would he know where he stands up against him?
