The manga is when AT was in his prime though, there are still tons of contradictions/inconsistencies, but it's way above the level we're currently at. I only regard it as true canon.

There's absolutely no reason for cell to brace other than tanking being damn inconsistent. Vegeta couldn't even beat a cell jr.

Even a mythical nonexistent rage boost wouldn't have helped him.
