Although 17's statement might make this questionable, 17 can't sense ki, and his data for the Z senshi is outdated (or in the case of Trunks, he has no data at all), so I think he was just being better safe than sorry. I think 18 would win, but it' might be a tough battle.

Vegeta said Trunks and the others would've been useless against #18. She smashes Trunks and Piccolo and fights Vegeta alone before eventually winning again.

Considering how 18 handled Trunks in canon, he doesn't even matter here. Piccolo is a lot stronger and might be able to help, but my gut's telling me he would be a very easy kill for 18 too. So the fight really isn't much different than in canon, where 18 wears Vegeta down with her infinite stamina.

But he is! Sick Goku >= Yardrat Goku because no one who didn't train with him noticed anything wrong, and Piccolo was stronger than that. Plus, he knew the androids were much stronger than Trunks and thought he could take them. I don't think Trunks got much stronger in the future. Future training is absolute shit.

Idk, the way Piccolo words this statement, makes it sound as if one shotting Trunks was more impressive than one shotting him. Plus, Tenshinhan lumps Trunks in with Goku and Vegeta, while not giving the same respect to Piccolo. I do agree Piccolo is > Yardrat Goku, I just think Trunks is even stronger than that. Training gains aren't the most consistent thing in the world anyhow.

If he was that strong, why didn't he kill the Future Androids before coming back? If he's significantly above Piccolo who is above Yardrat Goku, I feel like he would stand a real chance.

He did mention that he could fight the Future Androids "fairly well" in the Androids saga, which is a large difference compared to back in the Mecha Freeza battle, where he stated he was lucky to survive even 1 on 1.

In any case, going by Future 17 using less than half of his power against Gohan, it could be reasonably deduced that Trunks is a little above 50% of their power by the time of the Mecha Freeza battle, so even accounting for his improvements, it's likely that he wasn't quite at the level needed in order to actually take out the Androids, especially considering there is 2 of them.

Super Saiyans are still the top-dogs until Piccolo merged with Kami.

Piccolo is down after two hits since 17 basically OHKO'd him and 17 isn't monstrously stronger than 18. Trunks wasn't much to 18 either, but he was assaulted prior to fighting her, so I'll give him a slightly higher chance. Vegeta doesn't work with teammates at this point so it'd crumble down like it did in the manga depiction.
