Was it ever disclosed, whether in the manga or anime, what actually occurs during Vegeta's sacrifice? What does Vegeta do, exactly, in order to successfully commit suicide?

Expends all his ki. I don't think he can do like a 50% version or even 90% version. There must be some point where it's past a point of no return.
