Was numbering the Super-Saiyan forms misleading/contradictory?

Goku obviously first numbered the forms in the Boo Saga, but it seems contradictory to me. In the Cell Saga, Super-Saiyan 2 was considered better than Super-Saiyan in every-way, like a Super-Saiyan transformation only better, faster, and more powerful and so-on (also kewler-looking). The numbering though makes that sound as if Super-Saiyan 2 is an extension of Super-Saiyan and basically from the same branch of transformation, but we know in the Cell Saga Super-Saiyan 2 was seen as a transformation that just was better in-general than Super-Saiyan. Super-Saiyan but a better Super-Saiyan, not something that's just an extension of the first Super-Saiyan transformation we see.

Maybe all that changed in the Boo Saga though, so who knows.

Do you get me?

Numbering the Super-Saiyan transformations make it sound as if Super-Saiyan 2 is the next step-up from Super-Saiyan. In the Cell Saga, though Super-Saiyan 2 was treated as if that was better than Super-Saiyan in every-way, like Super-Saoyan but better Super-Saiyan. As if that was its own transformation, not just an extension/follow-up to the first Super-Saiyan transformation.

I mean, Toriyama seems to think the latter option, seeing how he said 2 and 3 are just powered up variations of Super Saiyan.

That was in one of those interviews after or about Battle of Gods, right?!

I mean back in the Cell Saga it seemed different.

I would like it better if Super Saiyan 2 was a different transformation as well (or better yet, a unique form for Gohan caused by his rage)

Yeah, Super-Saiyan 2 could have only been for Gohan (and even that maybe only when he gets really angry).

I mean before the Boo Saga they were constantly talking about wanting to surpass Super-Saiyan, not just find a transformation that's a power-up from the first transformation. Am I wrong or am I right? :sponge :sponge :sponge

It didn't bother me. I got the same feeling about it in Androids arc as I did the Buu arc.

Yeah you're right, although Vegeta apparently considered just buffing his muscles as "surpassing" Super Saiyan, which Cell even said was a very simple power up.

Maybe it's just one of those things where AT couldn't think of any-other name or just wanted a simple name. Or he changed his mind about it in the Boo Saga.

Even-though IIRC Vegeta and others still call that "Super-Saiyan that surpassed Super-Saiyan" even in the Boo Saga, so who knows.

Maybe he could have called that electrified Super-Saiyan. :ladd :ladd :ladd

Or to keep it really simple, how about Ascended Super-Saiyan? And Super-Saiyan 3 I guess can be Beyond Ascended Super-Saiyan.

Well it's better than calling the buff grade forms SSJ2-3 and then naming the actual SSJ2 SSJ4 or something like that.

It is, but there could have been a different name to the transformation. They wanted to surpass Super-Saiyan not make it better (that they wanted too, but there was clearly a difference).
