Was Yu-Gi-Oh! a fad?

In my child-hood Yu-Gi-Oh! was huge, but lost a lot of its popularity nowadays. So was Yu-Gi-Oh! just a fad at that time or an actual series that sustained momentum for a long while?

sure lasted longer than digaymon though
I'm not sure about that. Yu-Gi-Oh! came later and I'd say Digimon was still going strong even into the 4th season (at the very least 3rd I think), but maybe that's just my perception.

So you agree it was just a Fad? Because I see it more of niche thing today then back-then.

It's a series that ran it's course and has still maintained a following afterwards. It's just never managed to recapture the magic with it's spinoffs.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX was kind-of successful coming-off the heels of Duel-Monsters, but after that the popularity seemed to go-down. I'd even say mid-way through Yu-Gi-Oh! GX.

Yeah that's kid of what I meant. Nothing after the original run has been nearly as good. While it was still in the original run it was still pretty popular.

Yeah the original was watchable if you ignore the blatant merchandising tactics, but it got progressively more ridiculous with the sequel series until murderers got away with waht they do if they're great duelists

but yeah, still lasted longer than Digimon. Every season only lasts 1 year and only 4 came out in succession after which they all got cancelled one after the other, Yugioh's at least never suffered cancellation

Yugioh didn't come that much later I don't think, the manga began in 1996 which predates even Pokemon (anime), much less Digimon which began in 1999. Yugioh DM began in 2000 or so iirc, not that much later.

Yu-Gi-Oh! got dubbed in 2003 where I watched.

Whilst neither season 2 or 3 were as successful as the original Digimon, they were still quite successful, IIRC.

Season 2 was shite in terms of storytelling but still benefited from being in the same continuity as the first I believe. Season 3 suffered somewhat cuz it was excessively dark for a 7 year old's show, but it was still godlike compared to the atrocity that was season 4 I believe. Still, popularity steadily plummeted until Digimon merchandise was literally racking up dust in the warehouses in Japan and season 5 killed it even worse even though they had 3 years off TV to prepare for it lol. Never was the same after that second death.

The same goes for in America/Europe, too though right?!

To me it seems like Yu-Gi-Oh! was the kind-of thing that was very popular for like a week and then the next week no-one talks about it anymore (obviously not literally). Same goes for Bey-Blade. They were both shows though that promoted merchandise, like an extended advertisement.

Yeah Yugioh anime's popularity has been shit since 5Ds and counting, but the card game's still going relatively strong, it was even the world's best selling card game at one point. I think the new Yugioh movie appears to be their all or nothing bet to revitalize the show or something

It probably just feels like it when the writer only wrote the OG series, and the rest were buy other people. So the quality just slowly goes downhill.

I heard the anime for GX wasn't bad, but I read the manga that had a different story, and god that was awful. The ending was rushed with many unanswered questions like they canceled it.

I like to think it was. While the card game is still going on strongly I'd say you don't hear as much about Yugioh as you do something say Pokémon. In general I think the Yugioh anime is better than Pokémon's anime. I know a lot of people dropped Yugioh's anime after GX, some after 5Ds but I do know more people have stayed and are currently with Arc-V.

Pokémon despite being as old is still getting tons of publicity. The XY anime has won back a lot fans from what I've heard and Pokémon games are guaranteed to be top sellers whenever they're announced (Truth be told I don't even know why the anime has to promote the games, it's not like the games need the anime anymore).

-Duelist Kingdom: Has sentimental value to me, for it was my first contact with the franchise. Back then, i was just enjoying the show,
not knowing about the rules, so i didn't sit and ponder about inconsistencies.
-Battlecity: Great story and duels, but the censorship was ridiculous (discs that send you to the shadow realm instead of slicing you etc).
-Virtual World: Great Kaiba's backstory. I liked the refreshing change with the Deck Master rules.
-Dragons: I don't get why so much hatred. That season had the best duels in the original series (excluding the final duel). Also, i liked
the characters' development and Teen Rebecca was hot.
-Grand Prix: The only saga that sucked. It had one good duel or two that i recall of, but they took place in a ridiculous enviroment.
-Millenium World: Once more, cencorship killed the story. The manga version of the saga is a gift compared to this.

I don't think it was necessarily a "fad," but it definitely plummeted in popularity once the original series was finished and reruns stopped being as frequent. The card game has fluctuated a lot over the years, but it's never been as popular as it was when the original series was still going. The magic can't be recaptured. People latched onto the original characters, and you just can't replicate or surpass that kind of attachment with spin-offs.

I think they did a good job of that with 5Ds. IF Arc-V had kept the momemtum it had in the beginning than I would've said Arc-V is the best series we've gotten so far.

No, but Card Games became more unpopular after the '05s. That, and it got worse when they introduced Synchros and XYZs.
