Idk Goku dying in that way makes it a bit too dark of an ending. There is also the question of what becomes of Vegeta, who was still pretty evil.

Atleast the end of the Cell arc gave finality to Goku's death with him willingly deciding to stay dead and passing the torch to Gohan.

Even better yet, best that the series never start at all.

It couldn’t end during the Freeza or Cell Arcs. By those two points in the story it was so popular that it was literally impossible.

The only other ending it could have reached that was satisfying enough was the 23rd Budokai Arc.
