I think he was refering to the main timeline fly having the opportunity to collect Trunks' DNA, not his own timeline's.

There are so many plot holes, retcons, and inconsistencies...I think I will go with one of the earliest examples since it defies logic for multiple reasons:

Goku power polling the Rabbit Gang to the moon. Not only is this feat massively what the power pole has been shown to extend to but after it's established that Goku is a Saiyan the series frequently establishes that Saiyans can't breathe in space.
