I know that Ash almost always seemingly gets re-set for every new region, but sometimes he seems to carry-over some of what he's learned before or maybe his character just changed a bit for some reason.

Which Ash as far as skill goes would you say is the highest?

Diamond & Pearl?

From what I understand (stopped watching the anime early Hoenn except for some episodes here and there)

XY (Kalos) > DP (Sinnoh) >= Battle Frontier Ash > Hoenn Ash > Johto Ash > Orange Islands Ash >= BW (Unova) Ash > Kanto Ash

Yeah, I haven't watched consistently in a long time. Every now & then I watch an episode, but from what I've heard Best Wishes Ash got re-set the worst of any-other time.

Yeah Breast Dishes Ash ( :troll) got reset so badly he tried to capture the first Pokemon he ran into in Unova without even weakening it (much like episode 3 Ash) and later even used Attract on a female Pokemon... with his female starter. AFTER said Pokemon failed to use attract on it because they were both female :troll2 :alex2 :ha

Although in his defense, he did only get reset a decade because some guy prevented him from getting to the finals by bringing a team whose first 2 members were Darkrai and Latios. Whooped Ash's entire team and still had 4 members remaining, even though Ash used his reserves from Johto and Hoenn :troll

I also heard about him trying to just throw a Poké-Ball on the first PokéMon he saw from the region. :facepalm :facepalm :facepalm

That couldn't have been intentional from the writers...or could it? :troll2 :troll2 :troll2

They actually admitted it was intentional. They don't want the 6 year olds just getting into the Pokemon series to feel swarmed by making Ash look much like an expert, so he got reset to his Kanto self and even needed an intermission in an Electric type gym because he legit thought he would win with one Pokemon simply because it had a ground type lol :troll :troll

They reset his brain harder than they reset Conan's body :bordoga

That's a really stupid excuse.

I know PokéMon these days is kind-of episodic, but if new viewers really wanted to see how much Ash progressed and evolved I think they'd go back and watch themselves. That'd also probably have been more appreciated by all viewers (including new), instead it's re-setting him for no reason other than wanting to make newer viewers feel like they haven't missed too much.

You can sort of understand why though, since Pokemon is the most blatantly merchandise driven show in the anime industry, as proven by their inability to ever let Ash win a league (for the 6th time) simply so they can maintain steady viewership since they don't want to take chances of losing their fandom by putting in new protagonists.

That's true, but to have him re-set like that isn't the best way to go in my opinion. Maybe they could have just made the trainers of that region just plain higher than Ash, instead of re-setting him so that he looks in-experienced.

Well, that'd also raise the question of why they don't just move to another region and dominate there :troll

Do you mean the gym-leaders of that region? Maybe they did and have travelled. Just came-back to where they are from and became gym-leaders.

I guess the region after that would need to have alien gym leaders then, to surpass the level of Earth :troll

You could just use the same reason for everyone. :king :king :king

Not like the series uses much logic these-days anyways.

I would honestly argue that Kalos Ash was the most skilled incarnation of Ash though Sinnoh Ash is certainly a close second.

Don't get me started on that piece of shit known as Black and White. Iris had to tell Ash how to catch a pokemon. I wonder what those writers were thinking. :troll :troll :troll

I would say

XY Ash > DP Ash > Battle Frontier Ash > Hoenn Ash > Johto Ash > Kanto Ash > Best Wishes Ash

Kanto Ash = Noob (Justifiable since he was just starting)
Orange Islands Ash = Still Noobish (He didn't really HAVE to battle a whole lot during this time. 4 "Gym Battles" and only 2 of said "Gym Leaders" he had to battle excluding their actual leader).

Johto Ash = He's improved enough to where he doesn't need Brock or Misty holding his hand anymore, he's more strategic. A notch above noob level

Hoenn Ash = He's decent, he's good enough to take May on as his Kohai.
Battle Frontier Ash = He's good a mix of how he was in Hoenn and how he would be in DP.
Diamond and Pearl Ash = He's really good, came up with good strategies, he's mature, and MUCH more competent than he was in the past. It took a guy with a team of Legendaries to stop him.

Best Wishes Ash = Noob AGAIN (No excuse for why he was this stupid. He was so dumb he FORGOT his Snivy was a girl, was at a disadvantage against an Emolga, how to properly catch a Pokémon, and only brought ONE Pokémon barring Pikachu to a Gym Battle and had to LEAVE said gym battle to get another Pokémon and to top it all off he lost in the Unova League to a guy who an even BIGGER idiot than he was...even PIKACHU was agitated with his stupidity in Best Wishes).

XY Ash = He's great, all of the maturity, experience, and competence he's gotten as a trainer is back. He came up with good strategies with training or on the spot. He had probably his best regional team of Pokémon yet and a powerhouse with Greninja. It took an OP as all Hell Charizard and PIS to bring him down in the Kalos League. In general XY Ash is smarter than he was in the past with only his obliviousness being what makes him look sorta dumb.
