Whitebeard -- did he want to become the Pirate King?

Right after Ace's final exchange with Black Beard Ace said he'd make Whitebeatd the king of the pirates.

But then once dying Ace told Luffy he's only sad that he didn't see him fulfilling his (Luffy's) dream.

So what do you think?

i don't think whitebeard wanted it, and Ace was torn between wanting Luffy to achieve his dream and making Newgate the king of the pirates himself. A lot of people in anime have conflicting motivations

Definitely not. He was willing to let Oden join Roger to help them reach Raftel. His only interest was having a family in his own words.

At Marineford WB said that he was going to make Ace the Pirate King iirc.
