Before Yamcha's debut to be precise. We could easily tell he had at least some martial arts background prior to meeting Goku. Looking at his Rogafufu-Ken, perhaps he trained in a school that taught the way of the wolf?!

The wolf hermit must still be out there!

I think it was his own style. He was a bandit who survived many battles in the desert, so I think it's likely that he forged his own style during these hardships.

At the very least he should have witnessed experienced fighters go at it, and studied them. Makes you wonder how he ended up in the desert in the first place and why.

Yeah, forging his own style does make sense, particularly when wolves are commonly portrayed as being found in wastelands in fiction, the lone wolf symbolism of his lifestyle (before meeting Pu-erh, at least) fitting with it (especially taking into account his image song Wolf Hurricane). The most likely conclusion is he observed or read about many martial artists before creating his own style, which would seem likely when considering how unbelievably vast his martial arts trivia is for some random vagabond.

Perhaps he was born into a region that was surrounded by desert. Eventually he turned to the thug life to survive.

Something worth noting:

Chapter: 34, P8.1-2
Lion-Fang School guy: “There’s no way my Lion-Fang Style could be broken by a little squirt like that. What an awful stance…You’re full of openings…”

If there’s a Lion School (Or at least this one dude with a animal inspired style), then it’s possible Yamcha isn’t the only one out there to know the Wolf Fang Fist.

It's worth noting though that the Lion School's Japanese name though is Shishiga-ryu Kenpo, something a fair bit different from the Rogafufu-ken which only has one attack to its name. If it were part of a more formal school, you'd think Yamcha would have more wolf-centric attacks to his name than that (unless he was some dropout who only had time to learn one).

I can't remember exactly but it seems Jackie Chun mentioned something about Yamcha's style in the anime, when facing him at the Budokai tournament. Something about knowing how experienced he is iirc.
