Cell wasn't shown to take pleasure in killing people like Vegeta, Nappa or Freeza. He did it to achieve his perfect form but he did it quite efficiently (kinder may have been to kill them and then absorb them, maybe. Not sure which would be worse) - snook up on them and absorbed them without taunting them or enjoying their suffering. Freeza and Vegeta were also shown to kill typical children (not Gohan who's a powerful combatant).

Also, he destroyed 16 when he was peacefully coaching Gohan to bring out his anger, simply because he wanted to torture it out of him:

He only did that to 16 because he had the goal of fighting the strongest, which required an angry Gohan. Otherwise he wouldn't have bothered (same for Cell Jrs).

He did take pleasure in killing the Army. Dunno if that's in the manga too. Though he did it quickly. Freeza really tortured Vegeta just for the satisfaction of doing it and wanted to kill Gohan to make Goku feel despair. Vegeta killed a bunch of Namekian kids, and they're strewn around in ways that suggest he killed each one individually.

Any of the Z-Warriors sort of Trunks dying could've done the trick. Cell did it just to be mean and that's what set Gohan over the edge.
