Why did Tenshinhan, Yamcha, and Kurilin wait until the Saiyan arc to train under Kami?

You'd think they'd want to be trained by Kami as soon as possible, especially considering Gokuu set Piccolo loose so he could fight him again someday. Piccolo vowed to come back to kill them all:

They should've become Kami's disciples right after Gokuu left. They don't want to remain so much weaker than Gokuu and Piccolo, right?

It would have been interesting to see the Z Fighters in Battle of Gods, close to the power level of Goku and Piccolo (weighted). It would have been interesting to see how they all would have fared against Raditz.

I'd like to see them hypothetically at these power levels:

Tien Shinhan = 312.5

Krillin = 300

Yamcha = 288

Yajirobe = 275

Chiaotzu = 270

All stronger than Kami.

Who gave them the idea to train there after Raditz's revelation? Maybe they didn't realise how useful the training could be. Or that they would allowed to do it.
