Why is BoG Vegeta so afraid of Beerus?

All Vegeta knew about the Hakaioshin was what he heard from people. And what did he hear? Something among the lines of "ooh, Beerus da most powaful in da univars" but Vegeta does not fear someone just based on what he heard about them(that's in his character) Otherwise, he would be crapping himself against the Androids..or Cell...or Buu...but it didn't happen.

So, why?

Pretty much what Papasmurf said, in-universe-wise. Character development may also be a factor here.

Out-of-universe-wise, the writers wanted to hype Beerus up to an extreme level, hence why even Shenron, who is usually confident and professional, shat bricks when Beerus reached his point of view.
