Why was 16 set on killing Goku?

We know he didn't share Gero's evilness and such. But still killing Goku was something he really wanted.

Any speculation?

He was loyal to his programming, and was built to be gentle as to avoid him being destroyed due to his "father" not wanting him to die in combat. He was probably just destroyed by #17 and #18 when they destroyed Gero and blew up his lab in the future timeline.

AT said he was programmed to be gentle. My guess is that his failure as an android is due to him prioritizing peace which would make him disobedient to Gero and Cell (which he was right about).

Well, if he was programmed to kill Goku, wouldn't he run the risk of dying in combat all the same?

The model for No. 16 was Dr. Gero’s son, who died young long ago. He was a high-ranking soldier in the Red Ribbon Army, but he was felled by an enemy bullet. Having a special place in his heart for his own child, Gero gave No. 16 great power and a fearsome explosive mechanism, but not wanting him to be destroyed in battle if possible, he gave him a gentle personality, which caused No. 16 to become a failure.

Sounds like Gero started building 16 like he would with any other android, but as he got attached he ended up unwilling to send him to the battle field and made him gentle before deactiving him altogether. He also said it would be the end of the world if the others activated 16, so I think he was just bullshitting and saw 16 more as a personal project than another weapon.

I know but you said him being gentle would avoid him being destroyed... but who according to Gero's pov could kill him other than Goku and his friends?

Probably Cell, but ironically 16’s pacifism set them against each other.

I think it would make more sense if 16’s personality was taken from Gero’s actual son, but that wouldn’t make sense either since Gero Jr was military.
