His fighting output is severely limited by the time limit of Gear 5, which seems to be very short. He's definitely Yonko tier but he can't fight for long. Is mastery of G5 all that's left for Luffy or will he get more improvements?

I don't know if the time limit will truly go away, it's not even clear if Gear 4 can be used indefinitely right now. But I think Luffy's Haki growth will be the most important by far in reaching his peak strength. If he becomes as strong as Roger in just his base form, the Gear 5 time limit will be negligable in having to annihalate any opponent out there lol.

How strong do you think his Base form is? He could clash with Kizaru and Kaido but not really manage anything.

I have no clue man, just vaguely a top tier but not at the same level as the admirals and Yonko I guess. He's clashing physically with Kaido, who is maybe holding back a bit while also fatigued. Then in Egghead he's clearly unable to land a hit on Kizaru with G4 so it feels a bit inconsistent unless you headcanon some factors into it.

Kaido > Kizaru > Base Luffy > Yamato/Kid/Law/Zoro/Sanji or something along these lines. It's vague but that's the most definitive scaling we have.

I think with G4 vs Kizaru we are meant to assume there was more fighting off panel. Kizaru says he sees how Luffy could beat Kaido after that exchange.

Yes but we can see that Luffy was not making any leeway in the fight and in fact visibly tired compared to Kizaru.

So maybe G4 is currently close to Yonko level power but it can't be maintained too long, and G5 is Yonko level or better but has even worse stamina. Base level is so hard to scale.

He obviously performed better against Kaido than Zoro did once he learned Advanced Haoshoku, but Zoro never got to use Advanced Haoshoku against Kaido. Zoro's regular Haoshoku was strong enough to permanently scar Kaido which I think is worth something. Zoro had the same issue that Luffy currently does - he could only use it for one attack. With sustained Haoshoku, and now Advanced Haoshoku, I think Zoro has to outstrip Luffy by a decent clip. He was above Lucci after all.

Zoro > Base Luffy? Ehhhh… I don’t know. Maybe if he can use Asura sustainably sure, but that’s yet to be proven.

I also don’t think Base Luffy would have taken anywhere near as much time to beat Lucci as Zoro did. And tbh I think Zoro and Sanji are consistently on a similar playing field throughout the series.

Zoro’s strongest Technique > Base Luffy > Kid/Law > Zoro/Sanji > Lucci

That’s my current thought process.

Don't forget that Luffy wasn't fighting Lucci in Base though. He randomly felt the need to use G5, so Lucci should be pretty strong there.

On a seperate note, One Piece actually has some pretty trash scaling lol. Base Luffy resorted to Gear 2 against Blueno, before matching up with Base Lucci in the next fight. Sometimes it's just dependent on plot and whatever is hype in the moment.

Luffy should have been dead 1000x over at Marineford.

At best you can make vague generalizations about different tiers, but it's next to impossible to directly scale a lot of these guys. I assume this will only get worse as the series comes to a close and everyone keeps getting closer to that upper tier.

They all fought stronger at Enies than in Water 7, even the ones without Gear 2. It was a morale boost from Robin and the general lack of uncertainty, plus having become stronger from the fighting experience. Makes sense for anime and especially in a universe with willpower-based haki.

I know this my guy, but I’m only talking about Ennies Lobby. Luffy still resorted to Gear 2 against Blueno.

Luffy and Blueno were comparable in base.

Then he matches equally with Base Lucci the next fight.

Water 7 moral boost is not relevant whatsoever to this.

In that case the only thing I can think of is Blueno was using tekai, maybe Lucci wasn't yet. In terms of strength: Tekai base lucci >> Base luffy = tekai blueno = non-tekai lucci. That's a big doriki difference (4000 vs 800), but Lucci could be a much better-trained tekai user, meaning he gets a huge boost when using it. Or lucci just wasn't so serious...he looks like he's concentrating, luffy is trying really hard. In terms of speed, maybe 2nd gear passed some speed onto base already.

After rereading most of Wano I agree with this. I forgot how well Base Luffy was doing against Kaido after he was flown back to Onigashima.

I still don't know about Zoro and Sanji though. Zoro has Advanced Haoshoku which is treated as the pinnacle of power, Kaido even says only the top tiers can do it. Should Sanji be equal to that?

Sure? What Sanji lacks in Haki, he makes up for it with scientific enhancements. That’s probably why Oda went that route instead of being a pure Haki combatant.
