To be even more fair Haunter wasn't really his Pokémon to begin with. It just followed him and ditched him when he needed it. But I can think of any HUGE mistake Ash has made in the 19 years Pokémon has been going. In Best Wishes he was rebooted (But I haven't seen Best Wishes so I can't say anything). In XY that problem has been fixed since he's a mature/competent trainer again and is in the finals of a regional league and HOPEFULLY will pull out a win this Thursday. The obliviousness thing is annoying as well, Annabelle I didn't really care too much for, but Serena....Ash seriously you have a girl who is PERFECT waifu material for you at you side so... All of the Pokémon he's released he at least had a good reason to release them:
Butterfree - Start a family
Pidgeot - Protect the Pokémon of the forest
Lapras - Be with it's mother and family
Goodra - Protect the Pokémon of the wetlands (Although Goodra returned to Ash for the Kalos League)
