The proper way to handle that is that the boys were able to unlock Super Saiyan 2 or something. In terms of being more reasonable.

Ok, Super Buu is mighty strong, but a whole new transformation on top of his already ridiculous power should be more than enough.

Yea, Piccolo doesn't seem to pick up on any difference between the Base Kids from before. They are supposed to fuse at their full power as well, so no reason for them not to be. If Piccolo didn't pick up on it, no reason to think there is any difference there. It's just a terribly written idea.

The whole Gotenks scenario needs to be rewritten. One week in the ROSAT? Seems ridiculous for such gains.

Yea if we want to make sense of it at all, they never performed fusion properly is probably a good starting point. Another thing to note is that Goku isn't floored by their power. He is floored by them attaining Super Saiyan 3, but if he thought Super Saiyan Gotenks is around his own power and then they turn up fucking 100x stronger, I'd think it would be insanely shocking. Buu Saga really needs to be rewritten.
