Gohan felt confident in helping Goku as only a Base Saiyan, the only logical argument you can make is if Yakon's absorbing power could overwhelm Gohan.

But I can counter you by the fact that Goku Ssj2 overwhelmed Yakon, Goku & Gohan felt confident in beating Dabura, so it's say to say they could beat Yakon to.

Yakon is at base Goku's level (probably a bit stronger). Teen Gohan with SSJ would stomp him.

Gohan has neither Goku's mind to come up with the idea of making Yakon explode nor (debatably) the ability to go SSJ2 at will. Once Yakon
absorbed his SSJ aura, Gohan would panic and lose.
