Series: Fullmetal Alchemist
Author: Hiromu Arakawa
Demographic: Shonen
Magazine: Monthly Shonen Gangan
Serialization: July 12th, 2001 - June 12th, 2010
Volumes: 27
Overall Score: 6/10 (From a critic's perspective)
Fullmetal Alchemist is a good Manga as well as a popular one, thus it is considered a good gateway to Manga. It is also one of the few truly good Shonen that I consider not to have too much or too little success as a series... It also ended where it should have and hasn't dragged on more than it needed to.
The series is Shonen though, so it has its fair share of cliches such as friendship. But the plot has a lot of depth, and a good amount of complexity to the story which keeps the reader interested, such as detailed history and worldbuilding. It also tackles political, religious, moral, and philosophical themes.
While it does have rather consistent quality throughout its run, the tone in the first few volumes is a bit too lighthearted... While there was still a sense of mystery, it took some time for it to have a more serious tone. It also does decline in quality at a certain point, but to an acceptable degree. The story is carefully planned out, but the final arc reveals that there are still a few minor plot holes, and a somewhat disappointing ending.
However, overall, the good outweighs the bad in Fullmetal Alchemist, and it is definitely worth your read than most other trendy Shonen.
(I tried to keep the review as spoiler free as possible, which is why it's this short.)
